Mysterious tears of blood that have appeared on a statue of the Virgin Mary at a church in California are being called a miracle by Catholic faithful, according to a Local 6 News report.

Hundreds of people have gathered at a small Vietnamese church in Sacramento after reports circulated that the statue was crying tears of blood.

Local 6 News showed video of apparent tears of blood streaming down the face of the statue at the Catholic Martyrs Church.

Church officials have contacted the Catholic Diocese in hopes an investigation will be launched.

Many at the church are so certain the tears are real, they were seen crying themselves.

Ky Truong, who does maintenance at the church, said he saw the tears rolling down the statue Sunday.

Officials at the church said they have tried to wipe away the liquid but they continue to return, according to the report.

Hundreds Gather At 'Crying' Virgin Mary Statue

Crowds have begun gathering at a tiny Catholic Church on the outskirts of Sacramento to view an outdoor statue of the Virgin Mary that appears to be shedding tears of blood.

Members of the parish -- the Vietnamese Catholic Martyrs Church on Jackson Road -- first noticed the tears last Wednesday, but the statue was wiped clean by one of the parish's priests, fearing it was the work of someone playing a prank.

Over the weekend, the dark streaks returned to the statue and by Sunday afternoon hundreds had gathered to pray at the spot. Church officials were not commenting on the strange occurrence.

(CBS 13) SACRAMENTO There are often reports of statues or paintings of the Virgin Mary crying. There are even websites that chronicle the occurences. But it's not often there are sightings in your own backyard.

Overnight, some parishoners say they witnesses a 'miracle' saying they saw the statue of the Virgin Mary crying tears of blood at the Vietnamese Catholic Martyr's Church in Sacramento County.

We sent a crew there this morning, and you can clearly see some kind of red streaking on the face of the statue. A steady stream of parishoners came to see and worship in front of the statue. For many it was a very emotional experience. Many were crying, others were praying the Rosary.
